Tom Cruise to Oprah: 'Life isn't perfect.'

03:13 PM PT, May 2 2008

Oprah

This just in from Tom Cruise:

"Life isn't perfect."

Well, you could have fooled us. On Friday's "The Oprah Winfrey Show," sponsored, apparently by the Telluride Chamber of Commerce, Oprah Winfrey and her camera crew made the long, though terribly scenic, trek to the movie star's Colorado home for their first interview since the infamous "couch bounce" three years ago. After a strangely brief appearance by Katie Holmes and her astonishingly perfect hair, Cruise and Winfrey went on a tour of the family home -- from "the mudroom," where a pair of fleece-lined slippers marked "Oprah" filled one cubby, to daughter Suri's little "office" under the stairs, to the study where bound scripts from Cruise movies line the bookshelves (yes, there was "Cocktail," front and center) -- before settling into an overstuffed sofa.

"This is just so normal," Winfrey exclaimed as the two stood in the enormous, professionally outfitted kitchen while the camera went from the breathtaking mountain views to the plate of cupcakes on a kitchen table. You bet. Just two superrich, overexposed media icons sitting around talking.

Obviously, the interview, the first of two, if you can imagine, was Cruise's attempt to "settle all family business," to put to rest the rumors of mental instability that ran rampant through Hollywood after his manic appearance on "Oprah" was swiftly followed by his denunciation of Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants and his anti-psychiatry diatribe against "Today" host Matt Lauer. Since then, he has married Holmes, welcomed baby Suri, been "fired" from Paramount by Sumner Redstone, resurrected United Artists with production partner Paula Wagner, and, perhaps most important, returned to a haven of professional handlers -- after the "Oprah" debacle, he jettisoned his sister, who had been functioning as his publicist, and hired Paul Bloch from Rogers & Cowan.

Now with United Artists treading water after a lackluster debut ("Lions for Lambs") and a stalled "Valkyrie," Cruise has his eye on "Mission: Impossible 4" and, perhaps, a return to the hearts of moviegoing America.

"You're living your dream," Winfrey told him several times toward the end of the interview, to which he replied: "And I'm getting ready to turn this up."

It was difficult not to hear this as a threat. Turn what up? His public persona? I thought we were hoping to turn that down.

He certainly cannot have been referring to the famous grin, which was so blinding during the interview that one wondered if computer graphics were not involved. Nor did he seem to be talking about his on-camera presence, which was subdued to the point of near catatonia at times. No one would confuse Tom Cruise with William F. Buckley or even Robert Downey Jr., but there were moments when you really felt for Oprah, when you saw her straining every synapse to coax a complete sentence out of her subject until she finally gave up and filled in the words herself.

And it's not like the questions were all that difficult.

"What was going on with you [during the sofa incident]? How important is friendship to you? How is your relationship with Nicole? Does the press affect your kids?" were a few of the more burning queries. "Were you surprised?" she asked of the public reaction to his couch bounce, his marriage to Katie, the birth of Suri. It was "a moment" (the sofa bouncing). Friendship is the most important thing, his relationship with former wife Nicole Kidman is great -- "We share custody whenever" -- his kids love him and know he is there for them, and sometimes he is surprised by the rumors that swirl around him. "Sometimes it's like 'I get it, I get to make movies,'" he said, "...but certain things, you go: "Come on.'"

Indeed. We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

I don't want them to worry. I take care of things. Getting ready to turn this up. I wish for you the peace this mountain can bring.

Oprah spelled backwards is Harpo

Tom looks and appears sad.
I love his beautiful smile.
Tom.............please keep smiling.
You brighten my world

Poof. Trying to get some PR and market share in hopes that will help with the release of the now-twice-delayed Valkyrie. Poof. Valkyrie is dead. It was all like a stage set, and to me, the strangest comments were those about getting 25 people into the dining room for dinner, or 18 to 20 into the media room to watch sports or a movie. Who's counting? -- but does it seem like their family is anywhere near that big? Yeah, yeah, friends and all that, but it just sounded like so much hype, as in look how many people come to hang out here.

Mary McNamara, I have to hand it to you, when you commented about Oprah saying "This is just so normal," you could not have said it better:"You bet. Just two superrich, overexposed media icons sitting around talking"

I have read a couple of the Oprah magazines, and I have to tell you, her impression of reasonable cost for clothing, makeup and jewelry is completely skewed.

As for the interview she had with Tom, he very obviously has some emotional and mental problems.

Tom never answered the question of whether or not he was Suri's dad with a 'yes" or "no", rather, looked down, and turned the answer to a reference to Suri being compared to Rosemary"s baby - a simple yes or no would have sufficed - only adds to the speculaition of this bizarre family

Leave this cult Tom. leave it before the same thing that happened with that Texas cult happen to Scientology soon. Because it is coming.

well, tom definitely has some good handlers. his comments about friends and family packing into the dining room/t.v. room served to counteract the public perception of him as bizarre and isolated. he clearly had some talking points...

but he was abrupt and rather disingenuous when answering certain questions (e.g. nicole's relationship with the kids). to say that they "share custody" is not to say much. his half-formed answers left much to speculation.

Well. I have to say I was surprised that Katie left so soon. Maybe she wanted no part of this charade? I thought they were going to try to make it look like they were this crazy happy couple in a loving setting. Instead Tom looked beaten down and sad. His house looks like nobody lives there, and sterile. The properly placed pictures were SO obvious. He didn't appear to be showing his house with ANY joy at all. The Santa story seemed ultra ridiculous. If this was suppossed to put an end to rumors, I think it may have confirmed alot of them. Oprah must be sad to see her friend in this state. She HAS to know that his answers were lack luster, general and not the Tom she knows. I hope Tom and Katie find enlightment somewhere else. It's more than obvious, it has been nothing more than a financial and emmotional drain on the two of them.. Tom was already talented before he joined the "Church". I hope he realizes that he doesn't need THAT "church" to be enlighted, or successful. The truth shall be revealed with time. OPEN YOUR EYES AND YOUR MIND TOM!

You guys all need to lay off Tom. Is he a little strange? Yeah, but you would too if you had to live your entire adult life in the hyper-white light of A-list fame.

Some of you posting here, about his family, are probably weirder than him in your own lives and can't even claim to be as talented.

Cause the guy is super talented.

So I say, let Tom live. And judge him by his work, because life at the top is something most of us can't relate to, much less imagine.

Go away Tom... go far, far away.

I found it interesting how he talked about dressing up like Santa Claus & the talk of having a Christmas tree. Scientology? Sounds to me like Christianity.

I found it odd how he was talking about dressing up like Santa Claus & how they had a Christmas tree. Is that Scientology or Christianity??

Personally, I always really liked Tom Cruise. This isn't about him, but he should be held accountable for the dangerous cult he is promoting :/

Unfortunately, it is dangerous when likable personalities such as celebrities support exploitive criminal organizations like the so called Church of Scientology. This "religion" is responsible for some of the greatest government infiltrations in the United States and Canada (ie, Operation Snow White). Members convicted etc.

They compare psychology to the Holocaust. This is actually ironic because the ideology and totalitarian control of "$cientology" is much akin to the SS and Nazi's. The difference with psychology is in the fact that it has changed since the 1950s (when it was horrendous no doubt), but Scientology does NOT change.

They harrass their critics into psycho-social instability. Look up poor paulette Cooper, and "Fair Game". This policy allows Scientologists to treat "enemies" or suppressives like they are inhuman. They can be "lied to, hurt, sued, and destroyed".

They have CAMPS called the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) where disobedient staff members are "re-educated voluntarily" ... get real. Sometimes all these things go wrong.(WHYareTHEYdead . NET) Forced abortions in the Sea Orgs? Abestos on the Freewinds? "Clearing the planet"? What do these things mean Scientology?

I'm sorry, but Tom Cruise, you need to learn about your "religion".$cientolo gy can play religion when it acts like one. Scientologists must become aware of the criminal behavior of the leaders, and the brainwashing, the crimes, the deception.

Who was Lisa McPherson? Why are they dead $cientology. Why are you "destroying" your critics? Why can't Scientologists ask questions? Why can't they doubt? Why does it cost so much money ?

Until these questions are answered, expect us. We are NOT against a faith, we demand answers for the criminal actions of the Scientology organization. TRUTH is free!

Scientology needs its reformation.

I love, respect and admire Tom Cruise. He is a very decent man. He doesn't do drugs, he is a hard working man and he has integrity and moral values. People who know him in person only say good things about him. I expect him to entertain us for another 25 years at least and wish him lots of success and happiness from the bottom of my heart.

I found the interview very sad. A desperate attempt to try to ressurect his failing career. Until he wakes up and leaves that cult, his career will coninue to be a shadow of what it once was.

The only way for Tom Cruise to really resurrect his image is to leave the cult of Scientology. After reading about Scientology on Xenu.net and exscientologykids.com, it is far worse than I ever thought. That he can go on about his life and family and yet promote a cult that has a policy of disconnection of family members who do not like Scientology or be best friends with the head of Scientology David Miscavige who has reportedly beaten his staff members. Unless he strongly renounces all that like actor Jason Beghe has done, his star will stay fallen.

It amazes me how utterly lazy most reporters are and how most news is first reported in one place, then reported again by someone else, then another, then another. And it becomes "fact" at that point, even though the original report had it wrong. So it is here with a report that Sumner Redstone "fired" Tom Cruise. He never said that, it was disputed at the time by Paula Wagner et al. and even Mr. Redstone himself later said he never fired Tom. Yet here we see it repeated once again.

see this blog posting at the time this occurred for an explanation of the events when the supposed firing took place:

http://engineer.vox.com/library/post/its-not-personal-its-very-personal.html

and then Mr. Redstone's statement that he never fired Tom:

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20013941,00.html

It is funny how 14 months later after Mr. Redstone's very public statement that he never fired Tom, most of the media still report it as a firing, rather than doing some basic fact finding or even better, correcting a falsehood.

after seeing part one, i'm left with the impression of a cold cold marriage. poor katie (even though she was complicit in this marriage), as she's inexplicably LEAVING to take suri somewhere, five minutes after oprah shows up no less, she tells tom twice that she loves him, and he never even replies to her. IDIOT. oprah was like, i love you too katie, i love you too, to encourage a human response out of tom and there he stands, probably fuming that oprah has addressed katie at all. he has no soul whatsoever people, and part 1 is proof (as if you needed it). suri's CUBICLE you ask? near oprah's absurd cubbyhole with slippers? is too HIGH for a little kid to USE! it's like they think that cubbyholes by the door means family, yet there is no practicality for suri's cubbyhole to be out of reach. oprah's editors spun the footage pretty unflatteringly in many respects so props to them for giving us new glimpses into tom and katie's hollow marriage and tom's disregard for sanity.

While some of your comments are true, it doesn't change the fact that the Cult of Scientology is still a group that no one should be associated with, especially an A-List actor. The fact that Tom is and has been for some time speaks volumes. Celebs get special treatment from the cult because they are "special", rich and known by many. They're a popular, living advertisement for the cult, so the cult treats them extra special by stroking their egos and creating a bubble in which they can feel normal.

Sure, Scientology creates the illusion that they are a force for good by doing some good in the world using slave labor followers to do their bidding, but over all, they're up to no good. The best thing Tom could do for his career right now is leave the Cult.

I'm suspicious that this article didn't talk more about Scientology since it was a big part of the interview in the beginning. If my comments are filtered out, it only indicates to me that whoever wrote this article must also support the cult, or is afraid of it, which I can understand. Either way, it isn't a good thing. But never fear, Anonymous is here.

I really loved this interview. He is a real person, talented and in love with his family. I'm so glad he got a chance to share his side of things. He has brought so much to us all in his movies and he deserves to live w/o such crazy and intense scrutiny. So glad O did this.

Peace!

Oprah really should be asking Tom some tough questions-isn't that how she got rich and famous in the first place? It's so easy to find out the truth of the destructive mind control cult of Scientology these days-why doesn't she challenge him on his promotion of it?
Tom Cruise has destroyed his own career-nobody wants to know about the cult he pushes.
Please Oprah, interview Jason Beghe-now that would be a hell of a show!

andyd that may be true but what part did you not hear that he ain't gonna be talking about his beliefs no more and just promote his films? Were most of you living in caves or something? You need to get a better attention span. You guys are just NEVER satisfied all you'd rather do is spread more hatred, harassment and bigotry on beliefs you don't or would claim to believe you understand.

Well, I'm glad Tom Cruise finally took the chance to give us more details on his side of the story. I support in many ways the general message he was trying to convey back in 2005. While I doubt I could have done a better job (I'm certainly no public speaker or politician), I am glad to hear that Tom recognizes that he could have said things better and differently, in getting that message across.

With regard to the various accusations made about Scientology in comments above, these have largely been either debunked or explained over the years by Scientology's supporters and independent observers. For anyone interested, I would suggest the following site as a starter:

Tom,

You want to get your fan base back? Get over the wacked out religion pushing onto your co-stars, and find a real religion to hang onto....

I dont understand this TOM hatred club. Do you hate Tom Cruise because he married a virgin and not skanky fake blonds like you who have had 5 men before you were even 14 years of age?
Or are you part of the internet warriors from the hypocrisy religion? YOu propagate tolerance and yet here you are, propagating hatred.

Tom simply remains brainwashed. If he want's to stick with Scientology fine, I could care less EXCEPT why is this cult tax exempt. It's clearly not a religious group...it's a social club/cult. I want my tax dollars back!

Oprah and Tom; Tom and Oprah.
More empty "reporting" from the Mutual Admiration Society...as evidenced by those silly taped outtakes from other actors.
You're great, I'm great, we're all great!

I don't understand all the vitriolic hatred toward Tom Cruise other than out of simple jealousy. I'm a happily married, hetero, middle-age man and I admire Mr. Cruise for all that he's accomplished.
He has great discipline and his acting is certainly much better than a Harrison Ford or at least 20 other actors I can name.

And as far as his "religion" -- I have a bigger problem with rightwing fundamentalist Christians more so than Scientologists -- at least they don't go around starting wars.

TO LIZ WETZEL.
A Virgin??!! ha!
As far as I remember Suri was a guest in her parents wedding.

I thought Oprah had a house in Telluride as well; she kind of made it seem that she’d never been to Telluride.

Why rag on Tom? If i was making love to Holmes i would be jumping on everyones couch
If you belong to any church its a cult! !I have been inside the Scientology building in Hollywood working as a contractor, and an actor(they make their own in house films,a sort of brainwashing)But i got the same feeling when i worked at the Morman Temple in Westwood,Its all about keeping the flock .
Cruise is a good actor, not great but good,Anthony Hopkins is great! Leave him alone and work on your life,Oprah needs a man in her life, she seems to drool interviewing these guys.

"Life isn't perfect"? I would think that after giving millions to Scientology, it should be. Isn't that what they are selling?
Oprah has become a parody of the ridiculous dysfunctional egos she fawns over. "Normal"? She wouldn't know normal if she was in a psych ward. Cruise is mercifully over as his recent track record shows. He is an alien and bears no resemblance to a real human. His life is a series of poses, publicity stunts, facades and shallowness. He spends a lot of time in front of a mirror that's for sure. If you want normal, try people who can let go of the spotlight and value their privacy: Meryl Streep, Jeff Daniels, William Macy...they're about as normal as circus performers can be.

As the t-shirts say: "Scientology, finding wives for gay actors for over 30 years!!"
Oprah has lost all cred as a genuine, down to earth, 'one of us' who just happens to be filthy rich. She has become as ridiculous as those she fawns over and wouldn't know normal, if she were on a psych ward.
Cruise is clearly an alien. Every public appearance, gesture, comment is calculated, staged and choreographed. There is nothing remotely real about him. His desperate need to maintain his celebrity, gain as much exposure as possible is not what a healthy person aspires to. There are plenty of talented stars who have their priorities straight. The Meryl Streeps, Jeff Daniels and Johnny Depps live far away from Hollywood and don't talk about how much they are into family, they quietly show how much it means. No fanfare, no posturing.

This article was awful. Somehow, someway people like this author find a way to twist things to make them seem what they are not. I thought the interviews were great and am glad others got to see it and can form there own opinions.

Over the past twenty years I've enjoyed several of Tom Cruise's films, but it all comes down to his involvement with Scientology - a secretive, deceptive and honestly dangerous cult whose practices and beliefs need to be brought out into the light of day.

What Oprah SHOULD have asked Tom is: " So, Tom, you know, if you were to finally grow a pair and were to come out of the closet, you could positively impact the lives of thousands if not millions of gay teens around the world"

But alas... he obviously values material wealth more than revealing who he really is. But then again, he is an actor after all.

It's not like it would be any surprise if he came out... we all aleady know what the truth about is sexual orientation really is.
