The Many Deaths Of Dean Winchester: Bad Tacos, A Dog, A Desk, Oh My!

SupernaturalOn last week's "Supernatural," Dean (Jensen Ackles) gets shot and killed while investigating the disappearance of a man with Sam (Jared Padalecki). Things get a little crazy when Sam wakes up the next morning to find Dean alive and well. What's even crazier is that Sam keeps reliving that Tuesday over and over...and over again. Sam does everything he can to try and save his brother, but soon learns that he is being taught a lesson by a familiar face. The trickster.

The trickster god is back, and the whole point of having Sam watch Dean die many times is because he is trying to get through to Sam. Sam needs to stop trying to save his brother because Dean will die, and there is no saving him. Did the demon get through to Sam? Of course not. He's a Winchester; they're stubborn men.

The first half of the episode was watching Dean die, Lord knows how many times. You don't see all of Dean's death, but if you use your imagination, you know exactly how he died. The comedic timing of the two actors when Dean and Sam say the same exact thing at the same time when Sam was trying to prove a point to Dean was hilarious and perfect.

But the best part was when Dean asked if his death - when he was hit by the car - was cool like a scene from a movie. Dean's response, "You peed yourself." Dean responding back with, "Of course I did. I got hit by a car," was hysterical.

Things got a lot darker in the second half of the hospital. After the trickster ends whatever spell he put on Dean, a man with a handgun shoots Dean in the parking lot while he's loading the car. When this happened, we got a small glimpse into Sam's inner psyche and let me say, it's not pretty. Sam was like a soulless warrior ready to battle.

We saw just how dark Sam will get if Dean isn't around anymore. He was willing to kill an innocent civilian and even Bobby (Jim Beaver), who considers Dean and Sam family. The episode makes us realize that Sam is damaged and without Dean, he's lost. Sam and Dean need each other; they balance each other out.

The big question is: why was the trickster doing this? Possible explanations are: for Sam to enjoy whatever time he has left with Sam, to get it through Sam's head that he just can't save Dean or because he knew Sam would do anything to save Dean and wants to prepare him for the war that's coming up. The big war is coming, and it's coming next week. Tune in for what looks like to be the best episode of this unfortunately short season.
